SATA SSDs vs NVMe SSDs
Upgrading an older System from a HDD to a SSD is like jumpstarting a car with a rocket engine! The most common type of SSD uses the Serial ATA interface and are known as SATA SSDs. These are using the SATA 3 data transfer protocol (also SATA III or SATA 6G) and can reach data transfer speeds of up to 6 Gbit/s. In comparison, an average HDD has a transfer rate of around 130 Mbit/s.SATA SSDs are fast compared to conventional HDDS. However, NVMe SSDs are fast compared to SATA SSDs. While the data storage of both SATA and NVMe SSDs is based on NAND flash memory, NVMe utilises a faster bus interface: Non-Volatile Memory Express. NVMe allows for transfer speeds of up to 4 GB/s, which is six times faster than SATA.
NVMe SSDs are connected to the CPU via PCIe Lanes. PCIe allows for a much faster Data transfer than SATA. With the launch of the NVMe Protocol, a new physical interface was introduced to the desktop PC: M.2. There is some confusion about the M.2 nomenclature. It is not the M.2 connector, that makes M.2 SSDs fast. M.2 is merely the physical interface for the storage device.
M.2 is also known as the Next Generation Form Factor (NGFF). Currently there are 12 different Key IDs for M.2 modules. The most common for storage devices on Motherboards is Key M, which is connected via 4 PCIe lanes and generally supports both NVMe and SATA SSDs with the M.2 Form factor.
Most modern Motherboards have up to two M.2 slots for M.2 SSDs (both SATA and NVMe) and several SATA connectors. Using a SATA cable, 2.5 Inch SSDs or HDDs can be connected to the motherboards. In order to plug in 2.5 Inch NVMe SSDs a U.2 Slot is needed. U.2 is most commonly used as an interface for Data centre grade SSDs that use the NVMe protocol and a PCIe interface. Read more>
